RE: I bought a Nintendo DS.

Teachers definitely talk in the teachers' lounge, that is for sure. Everyone knows everyone else's problem children. The lounge is all about venting about the kid that is driving you crazy. As far as toughness, middle school is pretty much regarded as the toughest. The kids are are at a terrible age. Their hormones are out of control and even the "good kids" seem to grow attitudes. By high school, kids have kind of calmed down and are ready to laugh at your jokes again. They are just so stand-offish and too cool in middle school. Also by high school some of the real trouble kids have simply dropped out or been expelled. So there's that. Elementary is tough for its own reasons (kids barfing, peeing their pants, needing constant attention, being with one classroom at all times, etc.) but middle school takes the cake. I avoid it like the plague.

After your first week was it like what we thought when we were i8n school? You have a hartd day go to the teachers lounge and the mr. mcdermott if you will tells you not to " let the little f u c k e r s take control." I would imagine middle school would be the hardest. How long untill you get your own classroom?

I don't touch middle school. Every once in a while I'll do it if I have to but it is no fun. I do pretty much K-5. I definitely don't get to play videos all the time. I straight up teach. Kids don't come close to getting the upper hand on me anymore, not since like my first week. The thing is, most have never had a younger guy before and I am pretty laid back. So once I put the one jackhole kid in his place everyone seems to like me. I was such an smart-aleck in school that I can out sass the sassers. The kids love it. And some schools still do rock D.O.L. Isn't that crazy? Stuff like that is what I am talking about down below. It's terrible but some of those sentences are pretty tricky.

I`m glad you were not a sub for the young stunna I wouold have made you cry. Are you the sub that just puts on a video or tries to really teach them? I`m guessing that they are not too bad in 3rd grade. Do you sub middle school as well?    And is D.O.L. still hanging around?  I know you all remember that.

There's still plenty of stuff I have trouble with.

Colons are weird. You use them before a list, but only if it is preceded by a complete sentence. That's the only rule that I can really remember for them.

I don't even mess with semicolons.

This site is good for some grammar and punctuation geekery.

I always thought I was a real genius at English until I started subbing. I have the worse time telling 3rd graders where to put commas and colons and all that kind of stuff. I apparently am terrible at editing. I had one today where I was supposed to show the kids how to edit this real nasty paragraph on the overhead. However, the teacher didn't leave a cheat sheet. I had no clue. I totally took too long on the first thing so I wouldn't have to do it. Sad, I know. Wock would have punched me in the stomach.

"It's" is always a contraction of "it is" or "it has." So, to avoid confusion, when you're using it in the possessive sense, when you would normally use an apostrophe, you leave it out. It's a weird rule.

One easy way to check it is to try changing the "its" in a sentence to "his" and if it doesnt make sense, then you should use "it's."

I can't seem to keep my "it's" and "its" straight. It used to be that "it's" meant both. Now it doesn't. Maybe the English major could explain this to me. The futures of millions of little minds depends on it.

In My Word Coach, you do sort of a short placement test type thing when you first start it, and then the words and the games get harder as you progress and play it more. There's a bunch of different games in it, so it works on definitions and spelling. Nothing too terribly hard yet, but it's getting tougher.

I second EA's post. I was laughing at that as well. Is the vocabulary advanced? And if so, how advanced?

Stunna- I have never played NHL Blitz but NHL08 rules my life. Yzerman is a stallion.

I got My Word Coach for Christmas. It's pretty sweet. There's various games to increase and sharpen your vocabulary, and you get to pick a dude to be your coach in the game. He gives you **** when you come back after having not played for a few days.

Yeah, it's one of the many extra things they added to 64 when they put it on the DS. You have to catch 7 rabbits with each character (Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario) that are randomly strewn throughout the main area of the game, which is big. Then you have to catch 8 silver rabbits, it's a whole big thing. They're annoying to catch, all hoppy and shiz.

In the original version for the N64 you only played as Mario, this one ended up being a lot different.

The N64 controllers were the worst. I broke like 3 of those in one year. I think Donkey Kong 64 was the catalyst...

Super Mario 64 DS: Completed with all 150 stars and all 28 rabbits caught.

I know. The Gamecube controller always felt kind of flimsy. I was always scared of breaking it. But the PS2 controllers are built like tanks. I can throw them anywhere, anytime. The Wii controller looks like it would shatter if it hit paper.

And I am always up for Star Wars anything. I purchased Star Wars Battlefront II for the PS2 for next to nothing a while ago. I still haven't played it. NHL 08 and Godfather take up most of my gaming time.

That Star Wars game is pretty annoying. The good thing is it's really short, so if you feel compelled to beat it, it doesn't take long.

We're going to have to hook you up with Lego Star Wars. I think they make it for the GBA. It is awesome, straight up.

Super Mario 64 DS progress report: 148 stars down, 2 to go. And then the final battle with Bowser. I like to save it for the very end.

And I do love throwing things, I just don't like what happens to them when I throw them.

What are you talking about? You love throwing things. The Gameboy Advance you gave me came pre-scuffed. On a related note, that Star Wars game is super annoying.

97 stars down, 53 to go. Dude, this game is awesome. Just as fun as the original Super Mario 64, but with multiple characters (you can play as Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario) and the levels are a bit different. Seems like they cut out some of the harder levels that drove me crazy in the original.

I'm ok with that. I don't like throwing things.

I beat the New Super Mario Bros. yesterday and then promptly went out and picked up Super Mario 64 DS.

3 stars down, 147 to go.

He looked good. He said that he has a broken neck and continued to wrestle. The kids got heart. Mcmahon also admitted to using mad amounts of blow in the cowboy days of the 80`s. Do any of you watch the old wresling on pay per view? Also was that post from wock about piper. That guy is crazy. When I living in tampa I was aa valet for a party at hogans house and rowdy was in his car with big show lookin like tony montana. I do actually watch hogans reality show every once in a while.

I thought Buff may have been on hard times when I watched him wrestle at a Milwuakie Elks Lodge back in like '03. No joke. He wrestled the main event for the promotion that my friend Will was wrestling in. Buff still had the stuff. I own a really great b-movie breast-fest starring Buff as the villain. You might see it on Skinemax some night if your lucky.

And I second Wock's comment.

I think s h i t may have actually came out in my pants when I saw that scene for the first time. Aside from the MegaPowers exploding, Super Mario Bros. 3 was the most built up/anticipated thing of my young boyhood. I would lay awake at night going over and over in my mind how awesome it would be when Mario could fly. I remember playing it for the first time at my uncle Dave's house. Wock pretty much hogged it the whole time but I got a few good runs in.

Pivotal moments of my boyhood go like this:

1. MegaPowers exploding
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Hogan vs. Warrior at Wrestlemania 6
4. The release of the movie "Batman"

These were the discussions I was having at the grade school cafeteria near daily. What a nerd.

The GBA, however, does not.

Wock gave me his old Gameboy Advance (what a super bro) and I have been playing a lot of old school Super Mario Bros 2 lately. It is harder than I remember but I am enjoying it. I remember when I was a kid I thought this game was so daunting and now it doesn't seem that long. I pretty much roll Luigi through every level except for the ice levels where the Princess is key. One of the "improvements" for this version is added dialogue and sound effects that make this game 10 times more Japanese than its predecessor. Now when you grab cherries they say "Lucky!" in a really creepy way and other such things. Also when the pick stuff up it sounds like they are taking a dump. It is bizarre but kind of cool. And then Luigi sewed Toad's a s s h o l e shut and kept feedin' him and feedin' him and...

There are 8 worlds, with 80 levels in all. They're not really divided up evenly, but a typical level will have levels, say, 2-1 through 2-5, levels 2-A and 2-B (which are a bit tougher and not absolutely necessary to beat to get through the world), a tower, and a castle at the end.

There are warp pipes that you access through the traditional method of finding an alternate exit out of certain levels. The world map is on the bottom screen and you can switch worlds quickly by just tapping whatever world you want to go to with the little pen or with your finger. The other day I accidentally warped to world 5 but it was super easy to just go back to world 2 and keep playing from where I was.

New features:

Mini mushrooms that make you super tiny and able to walk on water and access areas you can't when you're normal size.

Mega mushrooms that make you almost as tall as the entire screen and able to plow through everything. They don't show up very often, which is good because it kind of takes the fun out of and minimizes any skill or strategy.

There are blue shells that pop out of some of the ? blocks that give you a kind of turtle suit. Which means you can throw yourself like a shell, which is pretty badass once you figure out how to control it.

And a ton of other variations on stuff from previous games.

It is super fun. I should be able to play this, move on to Mario 64 for the DS, and hopefully finish that up just in time to buy a Wii and get to work on Super Mario Galaxy. Thank god I've got some sick time saved up at work.

That whole Safeco field thing is insane. The future is truly now. Jeez, new 2D Mario? I love the world. The world is a wonderful place. How many levels are there? Is it the same format ie. 4 levels per world with a dungeon at the end, oppurtunities for warps and all that? Poor Robison better invest in a good book.

It was an inevitability, and I finally just went ahead and did it.

Bought a pack that came with Yoshi's Island, but I had to pick up The New Super Mario Bros. as well. Needless to say, it is awesome. It's kind of a rough mix of 1 and 3 (mostly 1), with some new features. I'm only on world 2. Taking my sweet time to explore all the levels.

So nice to get back to the old school 2-D format.

One downside of the DS: It's really thin and it cramped up my hands when I first played it. But, I picked up an adapter thingy that has an extra battery pack and wider grips and the problem is solved. Had to do the same thing with my GBA.

I really want to use it to try this.
