RE: Paperboy Is Still Impossible

Crossed the road for the first time in my life yesterday. It was a great victory. I will be good at this game. I will...

I'm telling you, I think we should just assign "Paperboy" a second meaning. It would be trump teezy. Or we could just keep thinking of impossible old school games.

Rambo-NES = rambo-ness

Or "Indiana Jones Atari Style"

That's a shame. Ground Kontrol is fantastic. Very easy to lose a lot of time and quarters in that place.

So, our best word to describe a hard video game at this point is "Rambo for the NES?"

It doesn't have much of a ring to it.

me and the old lady had an itch to play some old school coin-op games, and i hadn't been to ground kontrol since they moved to nw couch.  so the saturday after katie's gradutation bbq we headed over.

a burger time challenge was laid down by Jamie, as it was "her game" back in the day.  of course i schooled her, and while it felt good at the time i probably should have let her win.

but on the paperboy tip, ground kontrol has it.  of course the handlebar controller didn't work so good.  well the brakes didn't at least.  to my suprise i did pretty decent, but lost every life i had crossing the damn street.  the trick was always in the braking.

we probably spent 90 minutes there that night.  and i didn't even touch the pinball.  Wonderland you are a sorry assed shell of your former self, and i wish i lived in portland as much for ground kontrol as i do for the record stores.

You know, I may have been talking about the Rambo game for the original NES. I rented it various and could never figure out what I was even supposed to do. You just run around with a knife and shoot flys. What is weird is that Rambo for the original Sega is totally different and kicks major ayce.

Also this older Star Wars game for the Playstation called "Star Wars: Dark Forces," where I could never figure out how to get out of the 1st level. Although I think that was because I was just stupid.

I wish that I could come up with an impossible non-movie based game. It is driving me crazy. I am trying to remember Wunderland games that drove me crazy. That huge Star Trek game?

I seem to remember an Indiana Jones game for the Atari that damn near made me cry as a kid it was so hard...

I thought I remembered you telling me about a game where you couldn't get out of the first level. An old game, probably a scroller type, where you just ran around and there was no way out.

Or maybe I made that up.

You know, I was thinking of that. However, the trick is it needs to be a title that is solely a video game, otherwise the word may demand further explanation, which deems it to be ineffectual slang. It needs to be instantly recognizeable as a brutally hard/impossible game. "Yeah, this game sucks, it is a total Paperboy."

Except something different than Paperboy. Well, maybe "Paperboy" could just have two meanings. God, that would be mighty clever of us.

What about that Karate Kid game with the video that Wock posted on his blog(?) by the mega-nerd reviewing it?

Wow, I didn't remember this one but apparently "Paperboy" is a Sly Records slang word:

http://www.slyrecords.com/slang.week130.html

It is used to describe an especially eventful car ride where things jump out at you. Funny how things always come back around like that, huh?

This also got me thinking that we old school gamer nerds need to come up with a slang phrase for a really really impossible video game that just plain shouldn't be. You know, so if someone was like, "how was that new game you picked up the other day?" then you could be like, "lame bro, it was a total Ghosts n' Goblins." Or something of that nature. Christ, I would use Paperboy but we already used it.

Remember the consoles of Paperboy with the handlebars at places like Wonderland? Yeah, me too.

Wow, I may have to pull out the ol' NES and see if my Paperboy still works. Although I think I have Paperboy 2. But I remember it being basically the same. Hard as hell and very controller throw inducing.

I recently purchased one of those old school video game compilations for the PS2 and was super stoked to find that it had "Paperboy." Now I remember why I use to throw the controller due to this game when I was 12. Because even as an experienced 28 year old gamer I am still unable to cross the street just once, JUST ONCE FOR GODSAKES, without being run over by a car. Sweet game. No seriously, that is just what I wanted. Is a video game that is virtually impossible.

I hate you "Paperboy."
