RE: Hockey Is Finally Back

So that's it. It's over. Dold's Oilers officially eliminated my precious Nucks from playoff contention. Nothing hurts worse than 9th place. Nothing. The game was brutal. There was no reason that Vancouver couldn't have won. It was really a combination of Roli playing out of his mind and the Nucks remembering that they have absolutely no clue how to score a goal. Why do the hockey gods mock us Dold? What have we done?

Well, only 6 more months until opening day!

Biff it's great to have you back from the dead. Seriouisly. I wasn't sure if you heard about Patrick Roy's crazy son going crazy during a junior game last week, so here's a clip. Notice also that Patrick is the one behind the bench coaching the team. Something tells me his son is going to have the same level of craziness that he does. Something about those goalies man. They're all nutters.

My god, where to start? I'll go backwards.

1. Nothing makes me love hockey more than watching those old Avs/Wings highlights. Seeing two all-time stallions in Foote and Shanahan drop the mitts over a year-old beef is why the sport is awesome. You get justice. If you are a Wings fan, you get the justice of McCarty pulverizing Lemieux for his dirty hit. I love it.

2. I am so jealous that you guys got to go to a Hawks game without me. It sounds like you picked a doozy. A goalie fight? I hate you both. A high-scoring, close, fight-filled game, you really can't ask for much more. And EA, don't worry. I love to taunt the players. Although I try not to swear at things like that because of the kids and all.

3. As for Chris Pronger, I think everyone knows how I feel about the NHL's version of Shaq. 8 games for stomping on someone with your skate? 8 games? How does Simon get 30 and Prongs get 8? They are both repeat offenders so it can't be that. It is the simple fact that Pronger is a star player and Simon is a goon. All of the broadcasters seem to be making excuses like, "well, Simon's was premeditated and Pronger's was a spur of the moment hockey decision." So that makes it okay to attack someone with a foot long razor blade? Huh? If that is the argument then at least give him HALF the games that Simon got. Why is it 8 instead of 15? So Prongs can play in the playoffs. Ugh, I could go on and on and on about ridiculous this whole thing is.

4. I am going to quote the earlier post and address it below:

"Btw, Let's see how Biff's pre-season prognosticating compares with the current standings. :)

Biff says:

Western Conference (Real Life)

1. Detroit Red Wings (1)
2. San Jose Sharks (4)
3. Vancouver Canucks (8)
4. Anaheim Ducks (5)
5. Colorado Avalanche (7)
6. St. Louis Blues (14)
7. Minnesota Wild (3)
8. Nashville Predators (9)
9. Los Angeles Kings (15)
10. Calgary Flames (6)
11. Dallas Stars (2)
12. Chicago Blackhawks (11)
13. Edmonton Oilers (13)
14. Columbus Blue Jackets (12)
15. Phoenix Coyotes (10)

Eastern Conference (Real Life)

1. Ottawa Senators (5)
2. New York Rangers (6)
3. Atlanta Thrashers (14)
4. Pittsburgh Penguins (4)
5. Buffalo Sabres (9)
6. Philadelphia Flyers (8)
7. Florida Panthers (11)
8. Toronto Maple Leafs (13)
9. New Jersey Devils (1)
10. Carolina Hurricanes (3)
11. Washington Capitals (10)
12. Montreal Canadiens (2)
13. Tampa Bay Lightning (15)
14. New York Islanders (12)
15. Boston Bruins (7)

Care to explain some of your more erroneous decisions? The Canadiens or Stars or Thrashers?"

I will start by apologizing to the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils and Montreal Canadiens. All I have to say is "what the heck?" The Stars and Bruins, on paper, should not be as good as they have been this season. I am still baffled by the all-around success of the Stars. They have pretty much the same squad as last year that placed 6th. But 2nd? It makes no sense. As for the Bruins, now they simply have the benefit of playing in the East, where no team seems to be able figure out if they are good are not. Hence my awfully incorrect predictions for this conference. The Canadiens have benefitted from Kovalev remembering that he is awesome and a bunch of young guys (Markov, Price, Lapierre, the Kostitsyn brothers) that have made a huge impact on the squad. As for the Devils, if I would have known that the coach was going to strip Elias of the captaincy I might have placed them higher. Now, Atlanta should have been awesome. They have a good goaltender and two of the greatest scorers in the game (Kovalchuk and Hossa, before the latter was traded). I think I gave their defense more credit then they deserved. But in my defense, they played much worse this year then they should have. With their talent they should not be in 14th. I chock this up to coaching and losing Mellanby as a leader. The East is a fascinating conference in that there are really no great or terrible teams, excluding the Tampa Bay Lightning. It made it a bit rough for predicting but it made for a really dramatic season.

My predictions for the West seem a little bit more on, with the Blues and Kings being really the only huge miscalculations. The Blues started off great and simply fell apart after the all-star break. As for the Kings, I have no excuse. I forgot that they have no defense and Dan Cloutier as a goaltender. Dold, as for your Oilers, I owe you a small apology, but come on. I had them at 13th and they will probably finish at 9th. That's not so bad, is it? My Nucks proved me wrong and will be lucky to hang on at 8th place. Why is always down to our two teams? The hockey gods love/hate us Dold.

EA- thanks for bringing this up. This pretty much proves that I know the teams in the West way better and that I can rest easy knowing that I made the right choice in never taking up gambling. We'll see how the predictions look at season's end...

Man this is great....people on the TSN board are pissed about Pronger, I love it, some of my favs below.

"i'll tell you why he won't get suspended over this: a) he's a so called 'superstar' in the league and b) he plays for the ducks. as dumb as that sounds its true and believe me it is the dumbest thing i've ever heard of. this guy is allowed to elbow guys in the head during the playoffs and get jack squat for doing it so why would the league suspend him over this?"

"why all the pronger suspension talk? he is on my fantasy team and i can't afford to lose him. i hope the nhl takes that into account."

"if the nhl doesn't suspend pronger, how bush league do they look? simon gets 30 and pronger walks, for almost the exact same play? nice work fellas...."

I'm pretty sure this was you posting Biff, "WE WANT JUSTICE!"

"It wont matter anyways Pronger is a star in the NHL so he might get a slap on the wrist. That was evident in the playoffs when he took two back to back suspensions and only received a game for each. If that was a third or fourth line player or a tough guy (Simon) he would be sitting along time. Welcome to the NEW NHL boys and girls where it does matter who u are."

Seriously Biff, where the hell are you, I can't believe you're not ranting about this all over the place. I'd be seething if I were you! Can you believe there not going to do anything?!

Yeah, you totally had the Oil's number dead on there didn't you Biff! The Thrash, that was a terrible call, but I think given they're "predictions", I think you did an okay job.
EA, you sort of called it as well. I was trying to keep it a little tame due to the fact that you were new to the whole thing, not to mention every boy scout troop in Multnomah County was sitting directly in front of us. While I enjoy cursing and yelling as much as the next guy, I'd like to try to hold onto at least one sliver of class. Normally it would be a little more rowdy and curse-laced. I mean especially after some of those call, refs clearly had their heads firmly in their own asses on few of those. Perhaps if you come on Sunday we can get full on crazy lairy, and trust me, I'll gladly swing a pint and belt ridiculous songs at the top of my lungs with you and the Timbers. Man, I just want to get my name in the hat to saw a slice of the log off! That **** sounds legendary!

Green ice? Yowzaa, I'll bet that's something to behold.

You know, on the way home Libby and I got to talking about how it was helpful all around, attending with people that were into the game. It was that much easier sharing in the excitement and being infected by it (I was clutching my knees fairly tightly during the closing minutes as the score got closer and closer). It was also mighty helpful having a "guide" along, I feel like I got a slightly better grasp on the rules and how gameplay flows.

On the attending with a knowledgable fan tip, I got to thinking about how you and Amy behaved during the game and got to comparing it with how I behave at a Timbers game. Obviously it's apples and oranges, but let me explain:

Certainly I was monopolizing your time to a certain degree but I was thinking about how at a Timbers match I'll be singing/chanting and screaming abuse at the refs and opposing players a good majority of the time and was wondering on the way home if you and Amy get that way during hawks games. I guess I was curious if you comported yourself more politely since you had newbies along?

It was pretty funny whenever the Hawks scored a goal, because you and Amy would be out of your seats before I even realized a goal had been scored sometimes!

It was a truly amazing game! Seriously Biff, you missed a great one (ONE PUNCH!) EA, I think you might be good luck for the Hawks. The last home game of the season is next Sunday when they'll be having the green ice. Like I said, you can squeak in for only five bones, I'll totally be attending. Let me know if you and the lady are interested, had a super-rad time with you on Saturday.

Yeah, I agree with everything you just said. If the Nucks had to trade somebody, Cooke would have been my first choice. He is the king of the turtles. Guy is useless. I was stoked that the Caps made so many moves. Federov, Huet, Cooke? I too can't wait for the Ovey-Federov connection. What happened to the Oil? Not one move? Are you kidding? Is Lowe begging to be fired? At least do something. On top of that Thoreson got claimed off of waivers by the Stars. Are you telling me the Oil's forward core was so deep that Thoreson was in the minors? Ridiculous. I can't wait to hate Brad Richards now that he is a Star. And what is up with the Avs? Forsberg and Foote? They might as well pull ol' deader out of retirement. I'll call you to continue this sometime. About right now?

Dude Biff, did you check out any of the trade transactions yesterday! It was pretty nuts. I have to admit that I was super-bummed about the elder Hossa going to the Pens, as well as the younger getting shipped to Yote-town. There's no way that the Pens can afford to sign him in the off-season, so the real surprise will be this summer when we find out where he'll be playing next season. I've got my fingers crossed for pretty much any one of the Canadian teams (minus the Leafs) or the Rangers. As for the rest of the trades, there wasn't anything that I found really amazing. I was glad to see that the Nucks got rid of Cooke, that guy was a muppet, I mean seriously...drop the gloves already. I'm glad to see the Ducks made about seven trades for the big playoff push, if those A-holes win again this year! Oh, I was also stoked about Federov getting moved to the Caps, he and Ovey are going to be the new Russian connection, I'm totally pulling for them to make some **** happen.

Yeah, I heard it was an amazing game! My buddy Chuck (the bloke with the illegal Canadian satellite) called me and told me all about it. If only more games were like that! I have a funny feeling that if the game had been a USA broadcast game the refs would have reeled that **** in real fast. You know how us Americans dont like violence, according to Bettman.
I just sent you an email about this, but did you catch Coaches Corner? Seriously, it was one of the best ones Ive ever seen! Cherry was on fire in the last minute or so, f-ing classic.
My kids team spanked the crap out of the Vancouver team last night (11-2). Our first playoff game is Thursday and were going all the way ba-bee! Ill send you picture of me triumphantly drinking sparkling cider out of the Cascade Cup and being way to into our victory after it all goes down.

I started loving the game a whole lot more once I figured out what all the lines were for (courtesy of Dold at a 'Hawks game, actually). Once you understand the lines, which is really pretty simple once you get the hang of it, the game makes a whole lot of sense.

It was kind of like when Samarin explained offsides in soccer to me. While I think it is a ludicrous way to determine offsides, it makes the game make a whole lot more sense. But I digress...

Hopefully you see a "spirited affair" i.e. lots o' fights. Which reminds me. Dold, you missed the game of the year on Saturday. Canucks vs. Oilers. 200 penalty minutes. 14 fighting majors. This is just some of them from the last minute of the game. Watch the whole thing. There are three rounds, mainly of guys that never fight. It looks like a Hawks/Seattle game. Watch for Staios' slash on Burrows on the goal that gets him fined. Sweet cheap shot by Stoll, followed by a one-handed slash by Burrows. And on and on and on. Mike Weaver's fight is my favorite. Old school. Enjoy:

God I love hockey.

I actually got to play hockey with Zednick once and it thought I was going to pee my pants, considering we were both the same age (17), but he was twice my size! He was super nice, him and a bunch of the hawks were out at Valley Ice Arena for drop in hockey, they clearly manhandled all of us, but they weren't A-holes about it.
What's rad about so many of the hawks is that they do go onto the NHl, but so many of them come back to Portland throughout the season and come to the games, it's rad. There have been so many times that an old player just shows up and is hanging out a game signing **** and chatting with the people. It's like Portland is the cool indie kid that was into the band (player) before they signed to BMG and went maintstream, it's rad!
The whole neck cutting thing is yet again more proof why hockey is the stalon-est of sports, I mean yeah, Tom Brady had to worry about getting crunched, but at least he knows that his head will still be on his shoulders when he gets up! Back in the 80's there was a goalie (forget his name), that took a skate to the throat and almost died right on the ice, it was f-ing insane! I'll try and find it on you-tube.
EA I haven't forgotten about you buddy, I've got a heap of free tickets that I have to use up before this season is over. I think I'm going on either the 7th or 8th of March. Let me know if you're down.

I agree with you about the crowd. What a weird thing to have happen. The poor Panthers team looks like they just want to go home. It is hard to believe that there aren't more skate injuries in hockey. It really is kind of a freak thing. My favorite player had his calf muscle lacerated by a skate about a month into the season and is finally starting to skate again. Some other guy had his wrist tendons cut by a skate when, get this, they fell from their hanger while he was getting dressed. It has been a weird year for skate injuries, although I can't remember one in the two seasons previous.

The creepiest part of that video to me is the announcers' immediate reactions. They totally lose it for about 3 seconds. Craziness. Apparently Zednik will be released from the hospital soon so he will be okay.

Dold makes a great point about the Winterhawks. So many of those kids end up going to the NHL. Their games are mad fun.

I guess I should clarify that a person getting slashed in the throat by an ice skate is f'ed, not so much the guy or the person that did the accidental slashing. It's just wild that someone could come that close to losing their life while playing a game.

Crazy business. But the respomnse from the fans to the announcement that he was in stable condition was asolutely awesome.

Yeah, that trade sounds like a much better deal for the Senators than for the Hurricanes. Stillman is a better forward than Eaves and Commodore seems to be better than Corvo. At least he is much more of a stallion. This is the time of year where I feel really bad for the players on the number one team that get traded. How peeved are you if you're Eaves of Corvo and you miss out on a Cup. Aaron Miller on the Nucks says he is still bummed about being traded for Rob Blake the year the Avs won a Cup. Poor guy. You know the Nucks aren't taking it home this year.

For those who are curious about what Doldie is talking about, check out the video down below. It is too bad because Zednik is a Class A Stallion and he was having a sweet year. They upgraded his status to "good" today. Watch around the 2:00 mark for the real grisly replay.

E-roc, look who won't be going back to Russia...at least not for three years.

The Phoenix Coyotes and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension.

Sources tell TSN the deal breaks down as $4 million in the first year, $4.25 million in the second and $4.5 million in the third.

"I chose to stay in Phoenix because I love our fans, my teammates and I'm confident that we have a bright future ahead of us," said Bryzgalov Tuesday in a release to announce the signing.

The 27-year-old former Anaheim Duck was claimed off waivers back in November and has paid big dividends.

"He's a world-class goaltender with a Stanley Cup on his resume and has been a great addition to our hockey club," general manager Don Maloney said. "We are thrilled to have him in a Coyotes uniform for the next three years."

Bryzgalov is 16-10-2 with a 2.38 GAA over his 28 games with the Coyotes this season. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

Yeah, that is a pretty dangerous game. Do you have to drink when they announce his name during the play-by-play? Because that would hurt. But yeah, if there is a half hour pre-game, then you would get worked. Maybe I will watch it now...

Also, did you see that Ovechkin signed today? What did ol' Biff tell you just last night? God, I am a hockey genius.

Gary Roberts is my new hero. I watched hockey fights of him all morning. He never loses. There's even one where he forces Andy Sutton, who is a GIANT, to fight him. I also like how some of the commentators call him "Scary Gary."

Good stuff.

Canucks' Luongo to skip All-Star Game:

With travel demands and his wife expecting a baby, the Vancouver Canucks have allowed netminder Roberto Luongo to skip the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 26 and miss the team's first game back after the break.

So now you have one less reason to watch the All-Star game. I wasn't even sure if I was going to watch it, since it will be nothing but a Crosby wank-fest. But the lady came up with a genius idea this morning. Make it into a drinking game; every time they say the name Crosby, you have to drink. I'm sure I'll be waisted before they even drop the puck.
