That is my thing with them. Quit already with the endless merchandise of retread music. Write some new songs for god sakes. For example, "Devil's Food," which includes the entire half of their split EP, which is still available, with the "rarities." If you want the rarities then you already have that split CD so it is just double dipping. And yes, having your sales figures on your homepage is a gomer move. Release an album of new material every year and then releasing more live albums than Pearl Jam won't be so bad. And quit re-recording your old songs and putting them on EPs called "Paid." At least try to act like you are not solely after my cash. I love the Supersuckers but enough already with the merchandise. I'm surprised they're not selling lunchboxes and action figures already. And I am jealous that you have seen them play "400 Bucks." You suck. Are there any songs of theirs that stick out that you have never seen them play. I mean, even I have seen them play "Bad Dog."
I've heard 'em play "Can Pipe" and "400 Bucks" a few times.
It's weird. Because they haven't broken up, they're the only band that I've consistently been able to follow from my teenage years up to the present day. Do I think they're too old to keep playing the music? Absolutely not. Do I think that it's kind of crap that they've put out 5 or 6 live albums (and a live DVD) in the last five years? Yup. Given, some are EP's, some are acoustic, blah blah, but still. It's just kind of ridiculous. You put out a live album to hold people over until your next record. You don't put out 3 in a row.
I was at one point a Supersuckers completist, and I've since kind of given up. Well, there's still hope for that (I still desperately need "Put This On The Barbie, ****er), I guess. They just keep churning out weird stuff and fan club only CDs and it's getting difficult.
If you look at their website, they have sales stats for their albums on the front page. I cannot understand why they would do that and find it pretty tacky. Also, there's an mp3 of Eddie talking on there right now about all this stuff you should buy and how you really need to buy tickets in advance for their shows and not at the door. Ouch.
And now, you can buy a lifetime membership to their fan club for $300. It's $15 a year. I don't see that being a value. Lump all this stuff in with their endless eBay auctions and it starts to feel like money grubbing.
So, that side of it I don't like. But, I understand that they're all married with kids now and running their own label. So I guess it's business.
Nice work on knowing the obscure b-side to open the show. Neeeeeerd. Glad to hear they have played a show without "Creepy Jackalope Eye." If they don't stop closing with "Born With A Tail" I may become angry. They have been doing it for five years and it is just plain annoying. Of course CAC played the same closing song at nearly every one of our shows but at least it wasn't some remixed 10 minute version.
I love the Suck as much as the next man but I feel like the last 3 times I saw them, which was probably like 4 years ago, they played almost the exact same set everytime. Which is lame becasue it is the exact same people that go to their shows every time. I'm sorry, play "Can Pipe" or "400 Bucks" just once. Just once! Wock, I would enjoy hearing you rant about this more. I always enjoy your love/hate marriage with the Supersuckers.
Sometimes my phone takes really great pictures, and other times it's just a pixelated mess, like above. Eh.
My lady's not a big fan, but she went with me when my bromantic options didn't pan out. She was a sport, and I think may have enjoyed herself more than she thought she would.
I like how you describe the photo as bad and crappy and then post it anyway. Does your phone use Mario Paint as it's image capture software or something?
for the show review. I thought about going to see them when I was in Bend last week, but the lady never would have liked the music so I said to hell with it, I've seen 'em a buttload of times anyway.
Hadn't been to a Supersuckers show in quite some time. Seems like the last few times they came through town they were opening for Social D or somebody else who was playing the Roseland. Actually, I think the last time I saw them may have been at the Roseland a couple years ago with Rev. Horton Heat... Anyway.
Saw them tonight.
Eddie opened with a solo set, joined by Jordan Shapiro on electric guitar. Dude's kind of a choad, but Eddie played "Bottom Dollar" so I was happy.
The full band came out after that and put on a damn fine show. Here's a crappy photo I took with my phone and then some points of interest.
Wow, that's a bad photo. Anywho, some points worth mentioning:
- They opened with "That Is Rock 'n' Roll," their cover of a really old Coasters song that they released on a random 7" many years ago. Cool.
- Bolton's on the drink again.
- Their new (fairly new, they went through a few but have finally made this guy official) drummer is fantastic. He plays just like Dancing Eagle.
- They played 3 new songs and they seemed up to snuff.
- They did not play "Creepy Jackalope Eye." Surprising.
- They did play "Luck," "Bad Bad Bad," "Coattail Rider," and closed with "Born With a Tail." Not surprising.
- I was able to pick up Fan Club CD #6 and Fan Club DVD #1 for 5 bucks a piece. Which is great, because they sell them for like $20 on their website.
- All in all it was a great show. They played for a solid hour and really went for it.
I still like the Supersuckers. They're making it harder for me (It was $14 to get in and their merch table is really getting full of crap) but they always put on a good show. I'll always have complaints about the set list because I'm way too familiar with their catalog, but when I don't see them for a year or two it's a lot easier to get excited about it.
It's late, that's all I got.
