RE: Capt. Canada, Say It Ain't So

Yes, my natural gift for insightful and informative hockey analysis is pretty much wasted on you all. It is a crime against nature. I don't write the hockey analysis. The hockey analysis writes me.

Free Agency continues and I must say that my little Nuckers are making some decent, if not all that thrilling moves. Picking up Aaron Miller for defence will provide some nice insurance on the blueline and have started up a whole bunch of Mattias Ohlund trade rumors. While I love Ohlund I think that we could get a really great top 6 forward for him, and with Willie Mitchell providing incredible defense, I think it is a move we could make. Who would I like to come in via trade, you ask? How about a decent right wing with a right handed shot? Somebody like a Jason Pominville or a Michael Ryder. Or, dare I dream, Kovalev or Marian Hossa? While I'm at it, although I think he is great, I think that Linden's career is done. I hope he does not try to come back. Let's get some speed on that wing boys! Don't bring back Bulis!

The Kings somehow got better with bringing in Handzus, Nagy, Preissing and a plethora of decent players. Don't worry, though. It is the Kings and they will screw it up.

The Coyotes talked big about making the team better this summer but have done absolutely nothing to prove it. They got rid of Nolan, Scatchard and Roenick and replaced them with Mike York. Way to go high priced business men! Way to ice the same team that led you to 26th place last year! Looks like Yotes games will still be cheap this year.

Nobody wants Yashin so far and I can't blame them. This guy is a grade A moron. He is threatening to go back to Russia if no one will pay him 5 mil a season to skate slowly around the ice wearing that weird turtleneck and not scoring goals. What a maroon.

Teemu Selanne is probably retiring which is too bad but probably for the best. He is old and won the cup this year and really has nothing left to do. Scott Niedermayer is apparently retiring which is ludicrous seeing as how he is like 33. Why retire while you are on top of your game? I don't get it.

The Devils signed Vitaly Vishnevski which is really too bad. He is the most underrated defensemen in the league in my opinion and I love watching him play. Thanks to the idiotic schedule he will only appear in one game against the Nucks. Which is I guess good. I just hate to see sweet players going to the Devils because I would rather watch "Survivor" than watch the Devils. Could you imagine Vishnevski and Salo together on the Nucks blueline? Oh, I would be a happy man.

Sheldon Souray is the only "big name" left without a team and honestly, if someone like the Yotes or Blues don't go after him then they are crazy. Yes, he is a terrible defencemen. But he scores goals and is popular with the fans. The Yotes need a star now that Roenick is gone and Souray could actually sell some tickets. No one is really jonesing to watch Shane Doan. The Blues have already picked up Tkachuck and Kariya and if they added Souray they could turn in a pretty sweet season next year. I hope the Blue Jackets don't go after him because all they need is another terrible defenceman.

Mark my words, the Flames are going to be awful. Mike Keenan will ruin this team. They are signing a bunch of old dudes, Aucoin and Nolan come to mind, who just can't wait to get injured. My Nucks will own them and it will make me happy.

Poor poor Isle. Mike Comrie and Bill Guerin does not a good team make. Maybe next season.

I'll come back later with some thoughts on the Eastern Conference as I seemed to have largely ignored them here. God, I hate this schedule...

Come on Wock, you can do better than that.

So here we are, 6 days into free agency, and where are we?

Apparently the Rangers are going to be awesome, which is great for Dold. Apparently the Oilers are going to be awful which is bad for Dold. I can't believe GM Kevin Lowe sent an offer sheet to Thomas Vanek and was of course denied. Poor Lowe, where does he go from here? He couldn't get Smyth back, thought he had Nylander when he didn't and is now just trying anything to acquire a decent free agent. Winchester and Peterson signed with the Stars today. Will Edmonton even field a squad come October?

The Nucks have still made no signigicant moves which is fine but it does make me a bit nervous. We need someone who can score a few goals. That's all I want. Why couldn't we have gone after Zednik, Fedotenko or Lang? I would kill for Robert Lang. That guy is awesome.

Look at the Islanders signing Bill Guerin, Fedotenko and Mike Comrie all while getting rid of Sean Hill and Alexei Yashin. They could still pull it together to place 8th again.

I hate that the Avs are just getting better and better by adding Smyth and Scott Hannan. This does not bode well for my precious Nucks who have to play them 8 times. I predict nothing but awful things for the Flames who hired Mike Keenan to coach and signed Adrian Aucoin. What maroons.

I like that the Capitals and Panthers are at least trying to get better. The Blue Jackets have still done nothing.

And Bertuzzi on the Ducks? Just simply lame.

Dr. Dold left a two minute message on my phone today about how the recent losses of Smyth, Smith and Lupes have made him consider chop suey. I am here to report that the Oil re-signed Dold's favorite Raffi Torres for three more years so he will probably live through the night.

The Nucks signed Curtis "The Sandman" Sanford as our backup tender and I am extremely happy about this. He is awesome. We also signed Byron Ritchie of the Flames, which is a bit awkward because he is the guy on the receiving end of that sweet Bieksa punch that I have used the picture of for various things. I'm sure they'll make up. We also signed Brad Isbister, which I am neither here nor there about.

I will write more on the free agency later as I am tired.

Go Nucks!

honey, you and i both know that unless the 'nucks can get some players that wouldn't mind acutally taking some shots on goal next year things are not going to get any better.

So NHL free agency opened up yesterday with Ryan Smyth, Capt. Canada himself, selling his services to the Colorado Avalanche. Of all the teams, I mean I freaking hate the Avs. Is nothing sacred in sports anymore? The Oil have noone to blame but themselves here but who really loses are Edmontonians everywhere whose favorite son is never coming back. Sure he finished the season with the Islanders last season but it seems to me he should have either stayed there or headed back to Edmonton. Colorado? Lame lame lame. I just had to vent that.

Other 2nd day free agency thoughts:

The Nucks have done nothing to solve their goal scoring troubles as of yet, only re-signing Jeff Cowan and Lukas Krajicek who had about 8 goals between them. What the feh? I will be patient.

The Rangers look like they could cause some trouble this season, signing Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. Alongside Shanny, Avery and Jagr they could be out of control and stocked up with stallions. Which should make Dold feel better about his...

...Oilers, who not only failed to re-sign the aforementioned Smyth, but decided to trade away their actual captain, "Gator" Jason Smith, and Joffrey Lupul. Sure they got Joni Pitkanen and Geoff Sanderson, but those guys are terrible. Way to go Oil!

It's nice to see that the Blackhawks, Blues and Flyers are going all out to try to better their teams. Where are the Blue Jackets and Coyotes? Nothing from them which is lame. For shame Columbus and Phoenix! For shame!

I wish Dold was here to share his thoughts.

More later.
