RE: MC Ren

Seriously, that intro is so awesome and I don't really know why. You should really give this album a spin. "All Bulltihs Aside," "Mayday On The Front Lines," "Same Old Tihs," and "Do You Believe" are all unstoppable Ren.

And yeah, I still have no idea what he was thinking with that incest stuff on his first one. I feel the same way as you about it. Rough call for the lead track.

Been listening to "The Villain In Black" lately. Used to rock this cassette. I'll say more about it later.

I will never forget the first time I heard "Behind the Scenes," the song with the incestuous fantasy (?) being played out as Ren played the peeping tom. I thought I was down for whatever when it came to the hardcore raps, but that one crossed the line for me. I like the song itself a lot, but that aspect of it made me feel very uncomfortable. Still does.

Seems like we spent too much time listening to the intro ("11:55") on Shock of the Hour and never gave the rest of the record a chance. I too, was a little taken aback by Ren's sudden shift in consciousness.

Turns out he was just ahead of his time, eh?

I have been listening to an unhealthy amount of MC Ren lately. I am taking a trip back through his catalog chronologically and have really been enjoying myself. I'll always have a soft spot for Ren as he was kind of the go to guy for NWA. He wasn't a superstar but wrote many classic raps, whether it be for himself, Eazy or Dre. Poor guy probably had to write the lion's share of Efil4zaggin. Anyways, so far I am only two albums deep.

Kizz My Black Azz Ep 1991

A little short at 5 actual songs, this one gets in and gets out. The first actual song is a bit much with talk of incest in a positive light, something which was bit of a put off for my young 1991 mind. However now I can take it a bit lighter and enjoy the track. Aside from that you get 4 solid Ren songs.

Shock Of The Hour 1993

This is where I am stuck as I have finally fallen in love with this record. It only took me 16 years. In 93 I was put off my the heavy pro-Islam teachings, something which was new for Ren at the time. I wanted the album to be something different. Listening it to it now it doesn't seem so preachy. Maybe I am used to the Wu-Tang spouting 5 percent stuff every 3 lines. Whatever it is this album is uncontrollable. The only clunker is "You Wanna **** Her" which is an honest attempt to tell dudes to quit putting their pee pees in everything. Good message. Bad song. I pump this album biking to work everyday. That's what I've got going on.
