RE: Remixes

I agree with Stunna, simply throwing Dip Set over classic rock is not genius. I will take this time to announce that I am a curmudgeonly old man who simply hates the mash-ups. I thought it was mildly clever idea for the first five minutes of its fame. Now it just bugs me. You know why? Because it is lame. Simply throwing two songs on top of one another is not a skill. And more often than not I just want to hear one of the songs anyways. But that's just me.

My statement on DJ's was about the Paul Oakenfolds of the world who make millions of off basically releasing mix-tapes. They don't re-pro or re-mix. They simply take some songs, maybe edit in a segue of some sort, and call it their CD. That is preposterous. I do agree that DJing itself, like any other instrument, leads itself to people that are better than others. I respect guys that can do stuff with it. But simply playing a record and waving your hands around like a jackhole gets you know love in my book. I am going to go to a bar, plug in my iPod on random, wave my hands around, and declare myself to be a genius DJ. Because 95% of the DJs I have seen do basically that. A guitar player would never go stand on stage and play an "E" for 40 minutes (unless they were in King Black Acid) so why should a DJ be allowed to do the equivalent.

I whole-heartedly agree with the term "re-pro" over "remix." This would cause much less confusion when I see albums that have been "Remixed and Remasterd." That always makes me leery.

I feel you. I `m a huge Pharcyde fan and I fuking hate Benatar. Don`t get me wrong The Grey album is always in heavy rotation in my zune. I guess I get frustrated when they dont take the time to make a repo properly. Sometimes someone just puts the instros over the vocals and pray they work out. They then proceed to call them selves the, "innovator," who dared to put The Doors over a Juelz Santana freestyle

Stunna - I'd like to address something you may have inadvertently introduced to the conversation I hadn't originally intended on addressing; the mash-up. I can dig on those pretty well. Some of them are quite well and very entertainingly done. Though I agree whole-heartedly that many are absolute pants. Putting together two songs that I don't like already just makes the mash-up that much worse.

I've heard some good remixes. I've got a couple of good Blur songs, there are a couple of jams from Gorillaz "G-Sides" that are pretty cool as well. Without belaboring the point, I'll just say that I enjoy some remixes. I'd like to see the term re-pro (short for re-productions) introduced since that's a more accurate description of what's actually going on in most of that crap.

Maybe it's bcause I don't understand DJing very well that I give them some respect. There's definitely some skill involved. I went and saw LEN at the Crystal Ballroom and their DJs were spinning before the set started and they apparently hadn't taken into account the fact that the subs there are under the stage because their decks started skipping. That being an example of crappier DJs.

Basically, in a long winded manner I'm trying to say that there are exceptions to everything (lots of good "remixes," lots of good DJs) but also just a lot of asshats that simply throw a techno beat over a song, or remove absolutly everything recognizable from the original song and leave with some piece of garbage you never want to hear again.

I'm watching darts on TV.

The only "remixes" that I ever somewhat enjoy are hip-hop songs where the song is somewhat different. Maybe with different music and some extra verses or something like that. But techno remixes of rock songs are just pointless to me. My pet peeve? When you have to read the song title to figure out what it is a remix of. There are some Faith No More "remixes" that are basically ambient techno, with none of the original song elements included. How does that work? I pretty much agree with EA. I think it is a really overrated concept. And don't even get me started on superstar DJ's. That will make me throw myself through a window.

That ****tail mix show is really the worst thing ever. And you're right, the word "remix" has kind of taken on a whole new meaning. I still enjoy remixes as a b-side to a single or a random bonus track.

But yeah, throwing a dance beat over something does not a remix make.

Yes it amazes me that if can throw any techo song on top of anything you are all of a sudden mix master mike. I herd, and I`m not kidding a remix of pat benatar. They took pharcydes keeps on passing me by and mixed it with love is a battle field. I almost punched the kid at zumies who was kept telling me how sick it was. I told him to kill himself as to not pollute the population any further.

Y'all ready for a rant? So, I was listening to the modern mix on NRK (the program on OPB was worse) and it struck me how much I hate remixes. Not that I hate all of them, but by and large, they just suck. And not only do they suck, but it's a misnomer. First off, taking a song and putting a dance beat and some Roland MC-808 synthesizer to it doesn't make you some producer Da Vinci. And secondly, it's not a remix if you take a song and add a bunch of sh!t to it. To remix a song does not entail adding stuff, just re-"mixing" the instruments that are already there. It ought to be called re-producing since you're adding sh!t. You aren't just fiddling with the damn levels, you're adding tracks and editing sh!t and re-sequencing the song.

Idiots!
