RE: The Dream Band Thread

Wock- I did the exact same thing with vocalist. I knee-jerked Patton. We are brothers indeed.

Alright, here is another one, which may be breaking the rules, but I am trying to make a better band than EA's.

Drums: Terry Ted Bozzio- He can do anything he damn well pleases. And he's so cute.

Bass: Mike Watt- He murders the bass and would keep them all from being ayceholes.

Guitar: Scummy- Mr. Bungle's guitar player can do it all: Metal, pop, jazz, whatever. And his name is Scummy.

Vocals: Kevin Rowland- Dexy's Midnight Runner's lead man has pipes of Irish gold. Try singing Come On Eileen at 'roke some night. Good luck.

I think this one is better. But yeah, this is pretty impossible. What's tough is that you first choices might not actually sound great together you know. I mean, could Kevin Rowland do metal with Scummy?

Yes, not unfair, just too many great possibilities for me to wrap my head around.

But that's the fun of it.

Definitely not unfair. Definite possibility for endless sweet combos but there's gotta be one that does it for you, right?

I'm just glad to be hearing names other than Peart and Copeland on drums, flea or Les Claypool on bass, Brian May on guitar blah blah blah. I was tempted to tap Robert Smith as my dream guitar player just to be contrary. Rar.

This is an unfair question with endless sweet combos.

Off the top of my head:

Brendan Canty from Fugazi on drums. He's high energy and he's got that big bell.

Bass: I gotta go with Chris Brady from Pond/Audio Learning Center. I'm not sure that he's ever received enough credit for his distinct sound.

On guitar, and brace yourself, it has to be Stephen Malkmus. After seeing his last show it's really become clear to me that he is the most underrated guitar player in rock, or at least "indie" rock. He makes it look easy but he does a lot. I'm going to seem him at Doug Fir next Friday. Lobbin' a bit in anticipation.

Vocals: This is where it gets tough. If someone gave me two seconds to think about it I would just blurt out "Patton," but upon further consideration, I think I have to go with Tad. Just kidding. I'd probably have to go with Frank Black, Teenager of the Year era. Shocking, I know.

I'm hoping to hear from at least Dold and Wock before we get into the witty banter back and forth, however, yes, I would try to make this your one dream ultimate band. Maybe later we can get into interesting combinations and what not. Good on ya for sticking to the original rules. I certianly couldn't do that.

I do think my band is better than yours, however, your dream band is just that, yours. As my dream band is purely mine. I hadn't intended this to be a contest really, though it could be fun to try a dream funk band and see who can come up with the best funk band. Perhaps later?

So would an erection that comes from another drummer be called drumsticks?

Wow. I have often thought of these in my head. Does it have to be one ultimate band? Or can we think of various? Here is one that I would love to see:

Drums: William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate: One of the most underrated drummers out there. He gives me drumming wood.

Bass: Vern Rumsey from Unwound. He's a three pack in one night performer.

Guitar: Paul Reynolds from A Flock Of Seagulls. He's the one with the glasses. He would add beautiful effect laden touches to my dream come true rhythm section.

Vocals: Milo Aukerman from the Descendents. Is there a better vocalist?

I don't know. EA's band seems better than mine...

So a buddy of mine put this challenge up on his blog: you must create a custom made dream band and here are the rules:

"Choose one vocalist, one guitarist, one bassist and one drummer.

Pay attention to style and personal ego.

This is a band designed to play live. So, showmanship and stage presence should play a role."

So those are his rules, which I promptly went and broke when assembling my band which is:

Drums: Dave Grohl. He's money. He hits hard. He hits smart. He hits tasty.

Bass: Justin Meldal-Johnson (Beck's bass player) Are you kidding me? Game over.

Guitar: George Harrison. Seriously. Game over.

Guitar: Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) I just can't choose between him and George.

Vocals: Damon Albarn. I frequently ask myself WWDD, what would Damon do?

Producer/Engineer: George Martin.

So, my band's a 5 piece, with Damon playing some rhythm guitar and Jonny playing some piano/keyboard action as well. Now, since I've broken the rules, I would encourage the rest of you to do the same. I expect to see an MC in with this band perhaps as well. One thing though, I would try to keep it somewhat "reasonable." Dead people are fine playing together with live people, but you can't have a ten-piece or anything like that.
