"The "D" level is reportedly one of the more "goonish" leagues in the NESHL, and the 41-year-old Bermingham is described by a teammate as a "meathead" who's always looking to scrap."

This is incredible.

That might be worse than bricking a slam dunk on a breakaway in basketball. Actually worse, because points are harder to come by in hockey. I'm assuming someone beat that dude after the game.

I'm not too worried about a lack of NBA. Haven't really watched it in years (probably since around the time that Shaq had been in the league about 5 years or so). And to be honest, kinda thinking it might be funny/just desserts if the season was lost.

Biff, or anyone else for that matter, what are your thoughts on no NBA this year? I'm pretty excited about the prospect. In my own selfish way, I'm wondering if this will mean basketball fans becoming hockey fans, but probably not.

I think they're sort of ugly. A little too military looking for me, and it reminds me of a basketball logo for some reason. I was really hoping they'd just keep the classics, but there's money to be made, thus you get this damn new one.
I am however, pretty stoked like Staios that the Oilers have gone all in on the vintage jersey look both home and away.
Where the hell is Biff?

Well the Lakers did get beat by the Celtics last year in the finals four games to two, but i get your point they win alot.

And she's already complaining about b-ball withdrawals, and it's only been 4 days.  I'm quick to point out that football season starts in less than 3 months.

I could not agree with you more. The Wings kind of fell apart at the end. They didn't look like their dominating selves in Game 7. It kind of reminded me of '06 when the Oilers destroyed the 'Canes like 7-2 in Game 6 to tie it up and then didn't finish it Game 7. Of course the Oil never had a 2-game lead or home ice so there really isn't much of a comparison. I guess I am just still somehow bitter about that loss. Like when the Blazers lost to the Lakers in '02 (I think it was '02). I still weep over that game from time to time.

Speaking of the Lakers, congrats to your ol' lady Tussin. Is it tiring watching a team never lose?

Note to the Detriot Red Wings... you take a two game lead by winning the first two at home, and then give up two in Pittsburgh which evens the series.  However, when you spank the Pens in your house 5-0 in game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead you've got to finsh them off.  Don't let it get to a game 7.  Oh well...Better luck next year.

20 YEARS AGO TODAY...

Oilers owner Peter "KING OF ALL DOUCHES" Pocklington traded Wayne Gretzky to the Kings for $15 million and a few terrible players. Thus placing a pock apoun the Oiler house and cursing them for years to come.
I remember watching the press conferance and thinking that it hurt more than the when I found out there was no Santa Claus. What was poor Messier going to do without his super-bro!?
But now under the guidence of K. Lowe (who was a player on the team when Gretz was traded), and Mac T (also on the team at the time), the Oil have begun a new era and the Gretzky curse will be lifted! THE HISTORY!!!!!!
But seriously, TSN has a pretty sweet video about the whole thing, some pretty sweet vintage footage of Gretzky crying at the press conferance, and biff, I know how you love to watch athletes cry.

Yeah, I was going crazy yesterday when I saw this. Seriously man, I hate to rub it in, but the Nucks are going to be sooooo terrible. Something has to be done about the ownership there. It's getting a little ridiculous.

It is also amazing to me how many incredibly great moves the Oil keep making. I really think they have a legitimate shot at making it to the second or third round of the playoffs next season. I checked the schedule and they're are two different opportunities for me to fly down there so we can do a Nucks, Oil double header. And they're both later in the season, which is rad cos I think the quality of hockey gets more intense later in the season.

Kevin Lowe got a promotion and is now the President of Hockey Operations with the Oil. Steve Tambellini, Assistant GM for the Nucks forever, is your new GM. This is probably great for the Oil and is coincidentally yet another idiotic move by the Canucks this summer. "Should we hire our assistant GM, who has worked with us for 17 YEARS, or Naslund's agent? Hmm, what to do?"

Fascinating.

So Nasland is officially a Rangers, sorry Biff. As you mentioned above the Nucks new GM is pretty clueless on what he's doing. My condolences on that, it looks like it's going to be another rough year for ya.
Did you see that K.Lowe totally ripped back at Burke! It was rad. You should check it out on the TSN board, they've got actual video of it. My favorite part is how K.Lowe brings up that he has six Stanley cup rings to Burke's one. As well K.Lowe brought up the fact that Burke totally f%$ked over the Nucks when he left, and the only reason that the Nucks did anything after that was because of Nonis.

EA- you are correct. Pretty much about 23 of the 30 GMs currently have their heads right up their fat cabooses. Some are throwing way to much money around and some are not doing anything to help their currently sucky sucky team. Those 7 or so that don't have their heads up their donkey? I would say the GMs of the Red Wings, Oilers, Canadiens, Flames, Coyotes, Devils, Blue Jackets and perhaps the Lightning (time will tell on that one). All others seem to be on some sort of hallucinogenics.

The Canucks are officially captainless and have no sort of offence in their sights. The curse of Nonis has officially begun.

Yeah, I was pretty bummed out about Hossa. But you know it doesn't even really bother me that he signed with the Wings. He took less money to go to a team that he feels will win the cup, and I totally respect that. Plus the Pens are super pissed, and that's never a bad thing.

I'm sorry about the Nucks, it looks like another banner year is in their immeadiate future. The curse of Nonis is going to haunt them for some time. I almost feel guitly that the Oil are looking so good.

I think you totally called it with the Lightning and Wings. Nice to Gretz has finally decided he doesn't want his team to suck, but I can never be a fan until they get rid of prince douche Doan.

Have you seen the clip of Burke publicly tossing heat at Lowe?! Umm, mabye Burke has forgotten that Lowe actually played hockey, and will hesitate to hockey shirt and Draper face him for his disparaging comments.

Ahh, Sundin watch continues. I am praying he either retires or refuses the Nucks advances. Speaking of the Nucks, it is nice to see that they have done nothing but sign pluggers, something they already have a healthy stock of. Our new GM is not endearing himself to anyone, fans or other GMs. Offering WAY to much money to a 37 year old who is considering retirement and signing an offer sheet are not the best first moves. I don't know what this idiot is waiting for. He has done nothing so far to make the club better.

The Oil look much improved, although they unfortunately lost out on Hossa. The Wings are going to be scary next year. Pretty much the same squad with the addition of one of the best scorers in the league. Wings vs. Lightning in the Cup final? The Lightning are going to be fascinating to watch once the season gets going.

Brian McGratten signed with the 'Yotes. Considering they already signed Olli Jokinen it looks as if Gretzky is taking on a stallions only policy.

It only keeps getting worse....

The Oilers have traded hard-hitting left winger Raffi Torres to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for 21-year-old centre Gilbert Brule, and sent defenceman Joni Pitkanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for winger Erik Cole.

While I'm totally crestfallen of the loss of my beloved Raffi, Cole is a stallion, so I'm trying to stay on the sunny side here. I really hope we end up signing Mike Commodore as well.

So far the Nucks have been pretty quite this morning.

Ah you bastard, you beat me to it! I was just checking TSN before I came here. Yeah, it's not the best move (seriously Lowe WTF!). I can part with Greene, I don't think we was ever going to be what the Oil needed, but Stolli! Plus what's with the two for one, really? Come on, we should have at least gotten a draft pick or something. I mean Visnovsky is good, but he's not very big or gritty, plus he's older than both Stolli and Greene. We needed a good D-man, but I don't understand why Lowe didn't wait for July 1st and get someone really worth Stolli and Greene?
Did you see Tampa Bay is loading up this year. I might have a new team that I don't hate in the East. You may have a good reason to actually wear that jersey that I gave you.

Sorry Dold. Although Visnovsky will undoubtedly make the team better, there is no way to replace 2 good Canadian boys (thank you Don Cherry) like Stoll and Greene. At least they didn't move Raffi. Yet.

The Red Wings won the Cup in an incredibly dramatic Game 6, thus starting the incredibly long 4 month off season. I guess I could start taking my wife out to dinner on Saturday nights. Oh wait! I have the NHL network now! Nevermind, I will just spend my weekends watching Edmonton Oilers games circa 1984. Sweet sweet Gretzky.

Lord knows I watched it. 30 seconds left and Talbot ties it up (the closest a team has come to winning the cup only to lose it IN HISTORY) which leads to 3 full overtimes. I thought the game would never end. Petr "Stallion" Sykora, who hasn't scored a goal in the playoffs, jokingly claims to the TV announcer that he is going to end the game, and then one period later scores the game winning goal. Aside from the Pens winning, you couldn't really ask for anything more from a hockey game. I was in heaven.

On a completely unrelated note, Dold, how do you feel about the Lightning firing Tortarella to, rumor has it, hire Barry Melrose? It is bizarre to say the least...

Why why why do athletes/actors drive motorcycles or airplanes? I will never understand it. Don't they know that it is a bad luck to operate these modes of transportation when you are famous? That is too bad about Luc Bourdon. He was supposed to turn into an all-star calibre defensemen (he was drafted 10th overall a few years back). This year was supposed to be his first full year with the squad. It is just so crazy.

That Memorial Cup video is hilarious. And EA, everything is Spokane's fault. Everything.

I couldn't believe how great Game 3 of the Stanley Cup playoffs were. Sure, the Pens won, but it was still a great game. Maybe it was just because I haven't seen a game in like 3 weeks but the action was fast and the play was rough. If you have nothing better to do on Saturday at 5 I highly recommend turning on NBC at 5 and watching Game 4. Lord knows I will.

And yes, this summer in Nuckland may decide the future for years to come, good or bad.

Biff I ran across this on the TSN board today. It's in response to all the questionable actions by the owners. This guy totally feels your pain.

"I feel sorry for Canuck fans. The ownership is taking them down the Maple Leaf road, and we all know where that leads - decades filled with losing records and incompetence."

Sad, and true. Good thing they got rid of those ass. coaches, I mean they were obviosly the problem right.

I totally agree with you, what a sad end of the year. I will confess that the combination of working a lot and my utter disgust of the remaining 8 (and now 4) teams left me with not watching a single quarterfinal game. I am going to try and watch from here on out but I really don't even care anymore. I think I am pulling for the Stars as they seem to have the lowest douche to stallion ratio of the remaining teams. Morrow, Modano, Turco and Steve Ott are all fine by me. After that the Wings, since I don't hate Zetterberg, Chelios or Osgood. Coming in third would be the Flyers, who have Lupes and Gator, but also have a plethora of douches, the biggest of which is Briere. And then of course the Penguins, who are extremely frustrating. On the one hand, they have Scary Gary, Laraque and Jaarko Ruutu. On the other hand they have Crosby. I can not live in a world where I have to watch non-stop footage of Crosby and his dirt stache hoisting the Cup for the next 20 years. I hope Gator breaks his legs. With his mind.

Well Biff, the hockey gods continue to mock us. The four remaining teams are full of douche bags, the commentators can't get enough of Crosby and his dirt stache, and it looks like Nonis is going to the Leafs of all places. Wow, what a sad end to the year.
I keep going back and fourth between the Wings and Flyers on who I want to win the cup, I wouldn't even mind if the Stars won, I've got love for Morrow cos of his Winterhawks days. But I swear if the Penguins win were ****ed for years! You think the Crosby talk is bad now, just wait. At least if the Flyers win Gator and Lups will be apart of it (unfortunately so will Briere), and my hatred for the Wings has subsided a bit. I sort of enjoy the fact that they have so many old dudes, Chelios is still a complete stallion, mean as hes always been. God please, anyone but the Penguins! I'm praying that somehow Crosby pulls a Conks move, thus erasing all praise hes every received. Maybe then theyll make him save that pubic hair off his face.

Mike Gillis, agent of Markus Naslund, is the new GM of the Canucks. Way to go Nucks. Thanks for firing Nonis for no apparent reason and hiring a guy 10 days later who has absolutely zero experience as a GM. From what I can tell they didn't even interview anyone else. Yes, why interview qualified, experienced candidates when you could hire someone far less qualified? That would make way too much sense. Who knows? I could be totally wrong. Maybe he will be the best thing ever. All I know is, he better not trade Bieksa, Kesler, Raymond, Burrows or Edler. If he does then he is a complete idiot. Mark my words, a complete idiot.

In other hockey news, I pretty much hate every team left in the playoffs. I am now pulling for the Stars and the Rangers in their respective conferences seeing as how I hate each of these teams the least. I for some reason have lost some interest in the playoffs with the defeat of the Bruins and the Caps. I guess I wouldn't hate it if Montreal would win, but their fans would be such blowhards about it. Oh well.

I agree that basically Nonis has laid the bricks for greatness, and now someone else is going to be getting all the cred....lameo!

Yeah, I, unlike many Canuck fans, completely agree with you. I thought Nonis was a money GM. Everyone is blaming him for not getting a rental player this year but I am glad he didn't. He was simply honest with himself and knew that next year was going to be his year. He has all the young guys in place, Naslund and B-Mo's huge salaries are off the books, and he can finally bring in some scoring. Anyone who thinks the Nucks had any chance at a long playoff run, with or without Brad Richards or Marian Hossa, is drunk. The Nucks were good this year, but never great.

What peeves me is that whoever comes in will simply hire some scoring and look like a genius. The defense is there, the goaltending is there, it was just the fact that Naslund and B-Mo were sucking up about 10 mil in payroll. I didn't even remotely think that he would be fired so I was pretty crushed.

I wouldn't mind Burke coming in (it would give him a chance to really get at Kevin Lowe) but I don't think it will happen. The big rumor is that they are bringing in some guy named Brian Lawton who has never been a GM before. Yeah! Great plan Nucks!

RIP Nonis. Biff will miss you and your pudgy school boy doughface.

Sorry to hear the bad news Biff...

The Vancouver Canucks have fired Dave Nonis

This just seems like a silly move to me since,

A.)

The Canucks enjoyed their best regular season in franchise history in 2006-07, with 105 points to clinch the Northwest Division title. With 174 man-games lost on the blue line and a defence corps that never played at full strength all season.

And B.)

Nonis totally pulled off one of the biggest and most lopsided deals in NHL history! Unloading tuzzi and Auld to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Luongo.

Bob McKenzie is pretty un-stoked as well...

The firing of Vancouver GM Dave Nonis is wrong on so many levels.

I fully understand the disappointment in Vancouver with the Canucks missing the playoffs for the second time in three years, but it's tough to get by the following:

- Nonis has been the GM of the Canucks for only four years and one of those years was the NHL lockout. As a rule, GMs are given at least a five year run unless there is a sense the franchise is spiraling in the wrong direction and although the Canucks missed the playoffs this season, there doesn't appear to be any empirical evidence that the Canucks are on a free fall.

- Nonis was GM of the team last season when the franchise posted a record 105-point campaign and the team advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

- Nonis orchestrated one of the most lopsided trades in NHL history when he acquired netminder Roberto Luongo from the Florida Panthers.

- The Canucks missed the playoffs by three points this season despite losing a ridiculous number of man-game to injuries, especially to their core starting six on defence (Kevin Bieksa, 48 games, Lukas Krajicek, 43, Mattias Ohlund , 29, Aaron Miller, 25, Sami Salo, 19, and Willie Mitchell, 10). The surprise is they didn't miss by more than three points with that injury list.

One would have thought those factors would have allowed Nonis another year to make the bold moves he needed to make to transform the Canucks from a goaltending-dependent team with a pop-gun offence, but that is not to be.

On the flip side, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised.

Since Nonis took over from GM Brian Burke during the ownership era of John McCaw, the new Canucks' owner, Franceso Aquilini, obviously felt no sense of loyalty or attachment to a GM he did not hire.

The fact that Nonis is a low-key type individual who doesn't provide scintillating sound bites probably didn't help his cause either, but the sense throughout the league is that Nonis has put together a good organization in Vancouver and was doing a good job of drafting and developing young talent. Most thought he would get this off-season to make a bold initiative to re-vamp the persona of the team and inject some much needed offence.

But it's not to be.

Someone else will get that opportunity and while many will speculate on the possibility of Brian Burke returning to his old stamping ground in Vancouver, sources suggest Aquilini may already have his new man in place and that would most certainly rule out Burke, the subject of much conjecture for the vacant Toronto Maple Leaf GMs' job. Burke, of course, isn't going anywhere in the immediate short term.

Stay tuned, this should get interesting.

by Bob McKenzie

How rad would it be if the Nucks could get Burke back to work some of his "Ducks" style magic! I think that getting rid of Nonis was a pretty terrible move (similar to the Smyth trade, though not as bad),
so they better make up for it by getting Burke.
Thoughts?

I think Raffi and Stoll will stay. I base that on nothing of course, just the fact that the Oil have gotten rid of too many vets as it is.
For the Nucks, I don't think Naslund, Morrison or Linden will be back next season. Put the "C" on Bieksa! Next year could be crazy.

As for the playoffs, I am pulling for the Capitals in the East above all. After that Boston and Montreal (who have to play each other which, sucks). Maybe the Sens after that. In the West, the only team that I don't completely hate is the Predators, who I hate quite a bit but they have Tootoo so there is that. Seriously, it's like every monkey team in the league is in it this year.

Let's go Caps!

Yeah it suck that both are teams have exited early, but I'm still stoked for playoffs, especially to hate all the teams that always end up making that I...you know, hate. There's been all sorts of rumors that Raffi and Stoll are on there way out (say it ain't so!) cos of all the sweet play by the rookies. I think next year could truly be rad for the Oil! Who am I kidding, I'm sure K. Lowe will somehow end up Kris Draper, paying him every cent that the team has, he'll get hurt in the first game and be out for the season, game over.
But seriously, how the hell can you get rid of Raffi?!
